Making a Will
It is easy to put off making a Will. But if you die without one your assets may be distributed according to the law rather than your wishes. This could mean that your partner receives less, or that the money goes to family members who may not need it.
Making a Will – why it's important
There are lots of good reasons for making a Will
- You can decide how your assets are shared out – if you don't make a Will then the law says who gets what so your friends, favourite charities and relatives may get nothing. It is particularly important if you are not married to your partner. This is because the law does not automatically recognize partners as having the same rights as husbands and wives.
- You can decide who will administer your estate.
- You can include your wishes for your funeral.
- If you have young children you can name someone as their legal guardian. Without a Will there could be uncertainty about who will look after or provide for them.
- It may be possible to reduce the amount of tax payable on the inheritance.
How much does it cost?
- Our charge for a simple standard Will is £100 plus VAT.
- Our charge for a standard family ("mirror") Will is £175 plus VAT
If the Will is more complicated, for example, your Will includes a Life Interest Trust or Discretionary Trust, then it will cost more but we shall agree a fee with you before commencing the work.
Remember, we can store your Will for you free of charge.
